During a recent interview for Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, Ethan Hawke he returned to talk about the night he lost the Oscar for his role in Training Day of Antoine Fuqua and the phrase he whispered to him Denzel Washington right during the ceremony: “Better this way, better to lose“.

Asked to explain that comment, Hawke explained:

You don’t need an award to elevate your status, you elevate the status of an award. That’s how he thinks. […] The Academy has more power if Denzel wins two Oscars, he’s not the one who gets anything out of it.

He then added: “I was at the Oscars next to Denzel Washington and I was nominated together with Ian McKellen. I had already won. It was impossible for me to see it any other way“.
