Kate Middleton continues her convalescence in Adelaide Cottage in Windsor where she spends her days next to her husband, Prince William, and her 3 children, Princes George, Charlotte and Louis. But to continue her treatment plan it seems that the couple is thinking of turning a small annex next to their home into a refuge where the princess can undergo the necessary treatments.

The annex

According to the Daily Mirror, the couple appears to be contemplating the renovation and extension of a little-known red brick annexe adjacent to their Adelaide Cottage residence in Windsor. The family, who moved to the Berkshire estate in late summer 2022, currently split their time between the four-bedroom cottage and their beloved retreat of Anmer Hall on the Sandringham estate. While Adelaide Cottage offers an ideal location due to its proximity to Lambrook School, attended by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, it appears the family are considering expanding an annexe to assist the Princess with her recovery. However, this decision is not without its challenges, as the Prince of Wales is “aware of the public scrutiny” surrounding royal spending and is taking a cautious approach to personally funding the costs.

“No one knows that next to Adelaide Cottage there is a rather spacious red brick annexe which is not being used,” an insider said. “It is currently habitable and will require extensive renovation work if it were to be used. Discussions about using the property have been ongoing for some time, but it’s just a matter of finding the right time to kick off the project.” The need for space is more than a luxury; sources say it’s vital to Kate’s path to wellness. The princess needs a peaceful environment to undergo the necessary treatments. Mindful of past negative reactions to public funding, William is considering footing the bill for the renovation of the Adelaide Cottage annexe himself.

The Adelaide Cottage

Adelaide Cottage, tucked away in the Crown Estate’s 655-acre private royal park, was originally built in 1831 as a shrine for King William IV’s wife, Queen Adelaide. The cottage underwent major renovations in 2015 and boasts truly opulent decor. The ceiling of the master bedroom is said to be adorned with golden dolphins and rope ornaments.
