From the history of Deejay Time to sold out festivals, Albertino talks about the relationship with the new generations and the New Year’s Eve in Turin between music, memories and the future
Turin Time: the end of the year (at least) it looks pretty good. Indeed: a bomb. And how could it be different if the main live show is that of Planet Funk? The idea of having a group of tough and pure women get on stage is also excellent The Rag Dolls. The local rapper Baby she will participate in the double role of singer and presenter together with Marco Maccarini. The Irossa will open the show. But the icing on the cake will be that, after midnight, del Deejay Time Livethe live project born from the historic radio format created by Albertino with Fargetta, Molella and Prezioso.
Albertino, the Deejay Time program was born in 1985, live for about ten years. What is the secret of such freshness?
«I don’t want to be false modest: the thing that pleases me most is that several generations come. If it were just a conscripts’ celebration it would make me infinitely sad.”
A great satisfaction.
«I didn’t expect this job to last so long. I thought it was like that of a footballer, up to the age of 35-40. Instead, today we are at a very high point in our career: sold out forums, large arenas, a show promoted by Vivo Concerti, crazy visuals, an international dimension. And it will be like this in Turin too. The situation is truly at the top.”
Deejay Time is: Albertino, Fargetta, Molella and Prezioso. How important is friendship in this success?
«It’s not a given… it’s a coexistence that has lasted for many years. I am particularly close to Mario Fargetta, I am with him every day, all day. We are like Sandra and Raimondo. He’s a brother. Giorgio (Prezioso, ed.) is the youngest and maybe he sees me as an older brother… Each of us has had his own great personal success, he has matured his personality, but we get along well».
Does being a DJ never get old?
«I don’t accept this getting old thing. With my job it’s almost like I’m forced to be young, right? You’re always in the spotlight, they take photos of you all the time. And then there are the selfies where others look good and you don’t, it’s a bit difficult to accept.”
What place does Turin have in your clubber heart?
«Meanwhile you have one of the most important festivals in the world, Kappa. Then, Turin for me is Gigi D’Agostino and the Eiffel65, now Gabry (Ponte, ed.) lives in Milan and we see each other often. Subsonica are from here and I’m friends with Boosta, Samuel, Pisti…”.
How is the music in your opinion?
«It’s not a good moment for music today, a bit like for fashion: we are in full recycling. Great covers and re-proposals of things already done, just with a different fit. There aren’t even any big rock stars anymore, I don’t see the Rolling Stones around. Of pop stars yes: Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Coldplay…. DJs have almost replaced rock stars, and this should be a little worrying.”
Is it better for dance? Perhaps «dance» is a bit vintage as a term…
«No, it’s fine. Because there are many versions of dance. Of all the genres, thanks to the festival phenomenon, it’s the one that’s doing best. Less good, however, for the clubs, which we continue to call discos.”
Do young people still like to dance or has the phenomenon worsened after Covid?
«I have a daughter who celebrated her eighteenth birthday at home… Covid has really changed habits. I hate playing the part of the adult who has forgotten that he was young, but I have attended disco evenings with kids who didn’t dance, but made little films and sang.”
Sad, isn’t it?
“But then they reach the age of 22 and come to their senses.”
The most New Year’s piece among those you will play?
«Belo Horizonti by Claudio Coccoluto. I can’t help but think about him. He was a dear friend of mine. We were born in the same month of the same year, in August. We always wished each other happy birthday a few hours apart.”
