CONSULTING – According to the experts appointed by prosecutor Giorgio Orano, none of the doctors who treated the journalist in the Villa Margherita clinic in Rome realized that the journalist was suffering from endocarditis, together with the lung cancer with which he was forced to live. A simple antibiotic therapy would have saved him at that moment. But it didn’t go that way and Andrea died on the morning of July 19, 2023. The consultancy signed by Luigi Marsella and Alessandro Mauriello claims that the cardiologist Guido Laudani «omitted the prescription of clinical, laboratory and instrumental tests aimed at the diagnosis of infective endocarditis. In our opinion, these omissions are attributable to incompetence and do not comply with the good clinical practices identified by us in the literature”.

USELESS THERAPIES – The journalist was thus subjected to useless anticoagulant therapies and radiotherapy to attack hypothetical brain metastases when his fever rose: «It would certainly have been appropriate to perform a set of blood cultures and request an infectious disease consultation. The indicated tests could have intercepted the pathogen responsible for the febrile events and infective endocarditis with a subsequent request for transfer to another facility.” When Andrea was taken to Umberto I “substantially with the same elements, the doctors immediately hypothesized bacterial endocarditis and promptly carried out the necessary tests to confirm the diagnosis”. But it was now too late. There are four doctors currently under investigation. The journalist’s family, assisted by the lawyer Alessandro Gentiloni Silveri, defines themselves as “disbelieving” of the doctors’ actions: “Andrea was diagnosed and urgently treated for brain metastases which at the time of death were discovered not to exist. And this has led to a deviation from the correct diagnosis and therapy.” The incorrect therapy was repeated, according to their story, despite “the continuous and serious ischemic episodes” and “had very serious consequences, having led to immediate and important radiotherapy treatments on the entire brain at maximum power and intensity”.
