It is certainly no coincidence that yesterday, to celebrate World Endometriosis Day, the Macerata Ast chose the words of Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world”. Present were the general director Marco Ricci, the health director Daniela Corsi and the regional health councilor, Filippo Saltamartini, in the library room of the Macerata hospital, an overview was taken of this chronic and disabling pathology, with respect to which precisely in the structure There is a regional reference center in Macerata.

“The real problem – said Mauro Pelegalli, director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Operational Unit and of the Maternal and Child Department – is that greater awareness of the disease is needed to reach an early diagnosis, given that it still arrives after years”. This is the fundamental objective, also because endometriosis is on the increase. “It may also be that we have become better at identifying it, but the growth in recent years is undeniable. And then it should be highlighted that in 5% of cases the disease hides a carcinoma. A timely diagnosis, therefore, makes the difference.” In the Marche region there are around 500 women who have an exemption code for endometriosis, but many more suffer from this disease. “In the last ten years – continued Pelagalli – we have carried out over 5 thousand endometriosis operations”.

The director recalled how until recently the most accredited theory on the causes of the disease was that of the American gynecologist John Sampson, according to whom during the menstrual flow parts of endometrial tissue move in the opposite direction in the tubes, sometimes managing to implant themselves in the the abdomen, in the peritoneum, as in the ovaries and in nearby organs, such as the rectum and the colon, causing an inflammatory reaction. “The latest studies, however, say that the basis of inflammation is often the contraction of an infection, therefore theories of an environmental and nutritional nature have also been developed. It is no coincidence that right here in Macerata on May 21st we will talk about endometriosis and diet”.

The Macerata Center can boast important results, thanks to the specific path developed for the care of patients, of which a specific clinic is a fundamental hub, but also to the multidisciplinary approach and consolidated team work. What emerged forcefully in the interventions of doctors Francesca Orici, Valentina Paris and Francesca Panfoli, “We were the first – Pelagalli recalled – to perform the Nose, an intestinal resection operation for endometriosis without involving the abdominal wall, that is, without the classic cut. We deal with all endometriotic pathologies, even the most severe ones.”

The ceremony concluded with the positioning of a yellow bench, the color of endometriosis, to the side of the hospital entrance. The general director of Ast 3, Marco Ricci, the health director Daniela Corsi and the regional councilor Filippo Saltamartini underlined the high professionalism of the Macerata doctors, of which we must be proud.
