“I was lucky. But it was a devastating experience. No woman deserves to go through what I went through. That’s why I’m here.” What was the luck of Cristina Brunetti, 51 years old, born in Jesi? “That of meeting Dr. Mauro Pelagalli after years of suffering and tribulations. It all started in 2016 with pain in my left hip. It took me a year to understand that these manifested themselves punctually every time my period started. But only after another four years I was diagnosed with extrapelvic endometriosis and uterine fibroid.” Having identified the cause, Cristina thought that she could finally be cured and that the pain would go away. But the drugs proved ineffective and after having also turned unsuccessfully to a specialized center, she was advised to have a consultation with Dr. Mauro Pelagalli, a gynecologist specialized in the treatment of endometriosis. “Meeting this professional was my luck, I immediately understood that I was dealing with a person who knew my illness well.” Pelagalli referred her to Mantua to have a more in-depth MRI and verify that the extrapelvic endometriosis had not infiltrated the sciatic nerve. Unfortunately, an infiltrating endometriosis of the left sciatic nerve emerged. So Pelagalli prescribed the pharmacological treatment and advised her to contact the professor and doctor Marc Giocaver of Zurich, the first neuropelveologist in the world, specialized in the treatment of deep endometriosis infiltrating the sciatic nerve. Cristina thought about it a bit. Then, when she realized that she would risk spending the rest of her life in a wheelchair, she decided to have surgery. The first six months after the surgery were quite tough. Now, however, she walks normally and has taken back her life.
