In the imminence of the publication of the new edition of the “Giorgio Rota report” edited by Center Einaudithe professor Luca Davico spoke at Palazzo Civico, in a session of the Fifth Commission.

The audition was an opportunity to make a focus on the situation of young people, education, culture and tourism in Turin, from which no comforting picture emerged.

The number of young residents in the city is decreasing and the decrease is no longer compensated – as in the past – by young foreigners. There are also “very few qualified young people” – stated Professor Davico.

Culture is recovering after the Covid-19 pandemic. Some are doing even better (like the Egizio, the fifth most visited museum in Italy, the 85th in the world), others not yet (like the Reggia di Venaria), based on 2022 data.

Cinema, on the other hand, has not recovered from the “shock” of Covid, while the exhibition system is recovering, even if it is suffering from the effect of the Milan – Rho exhibition centre. In terms of international conferences, Turin ranks fifth in Italy (after Rome, Milan, Bologna and Florence) and forty-eighth in Europe.

In 2022, the Salone del Gusto – Terra Madre (350 thousand visitors) and the International Book Fair (168 thousand visitors) did well. However, tourism – explained Luca Davico – employs few workers compared to the average of other Italian cities.
