When voting for the 2024 European elections

The election for the renewal of the European Parliament takes place every five years, between Thursday 6 and Sunday 9 June in all member states. However, each state has the right to decide the dates and times to be allocated to the electoral consultation. In Italy we vote on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June. The Italians residing abroad and registered with AIRE they can vote on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 June.

How to vote

To vote you will need to go to the polling station where you are registered which corresponds to the section of your place of residence. The polling station is indicated on the electoral card. If you do not have the card, you must contact your municipality of residence. To vote you must bring your identity document and ballot paper with you.

Once you enter the booth you are faced with a different ballot depending on your constituency. The round symbols represent the various electoral lists, individual parties or groups of parties. To vote you must put an x on the symbol in the list that you want to vote for and in addition you can also write up to three names of candidates belonging to that specific list.

To express your preferences you must use the pencil provided by the polling station and respect two conditions. The first is gender representation whereby it is not possible to choose only three women or three men and the second that separate voting is not possible whereby all the candidates voted for must belong to the same list.

Polling times

But what are the polling times for the 2024 European elections? On Saturday 8 June the polling stations will open at 3pm and close at 11pm, while on Sunday 9 June they will open at 7am and close at 11pm. After the polls close, at 11pm, the ballots will be counted and all the documentation will be sent to the electoral office provincial and then to the national electoral office.

The electoral lists or parties will only be elected if they reach the 4% threshold. For each list or party, the preferences obtained by each candidate will be counted.

European elections 2024 how to vote from abroad

Italians residing abroad in European Union countries can:

vote for candidates included in the lists presented by political parties and movements in the country of EU residence for the members of the European Parliament due to that country, by submitting a specific application according to the terms and methods established by the state of residence;
vote for candidates included in the lists presented in Italy by the political parties and movements for the members of the European Parliament belonging to Italy: these voters are officially registered on the electoral lists and will exercise their right to vote at the appropriate polling stations set up by the diplomatic and consular offices of the EU country of residence.

How many Members of the European Parliament are there?

There are 705 deputies in the European Parliament (but there will be 720 members after the 2024 elections), of which 76 belong to our country. Since 1979, deputies have been elected by direct universal suffrage for a period of five years.
