Valeria Golino gets back behind the camera for “The art of joy“, the first series as a director, freely based on the posthumous novel of the same name by Goliarda Sapienza. After the success at Cannes, before arriving on Sky and Now it is released in cinemas in two parts: the first was released on 30 May, the second tomorrow Thursday 13 June. In an interview with Corriere della Sera Golino spoke about the set, the future, the passing of time, the quotas and when Julia Roberts he blew her two films.

Valeria vs Julia

“The art of joy”, the Sky Original and HT Film TV series, after being presented as a world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, was released in the first part at the cinema at the end of May, the second will be released starting tomorrow and then it will land on Sky. Director Valeria Golino.

It is not the first time behind the camera, her first work dates back to 2013 with “Miele”, for Valeria Golino who is one of the few Italian actresses successfully “exported” abroad. In America you have shot 18 films including: “Rain Man” where you acted alongside Tom Cruise And Dustin Hoffmanin “Lone Wolf” by Sean Pennin “Leaving Las Vegas”, “Frida” and “Hot Shots!”, just to name a few.

«Dustin Hoffmann gave me vitamins, Tom Cruise affectionately gave me paintings and watches. These are anecdotes that almost no longer concern me – she tells Corriere della Sera – Many other good and missed things have happened, apart from the audition for Pretty Woman when I was the only one left next to Julia Roberts. Well, there’s something I never revealed. I still preferred Julia Roberts to Deadline by Joel Schumacher. In fact, it got worse. She gave up on the film, then two days before I signed the contract (and they had rewritten the story about me) she thought better of it. They took her.”

Valeria Golino “intimate”

The interview is an opportunity to also get to know a more intimate Valeria who sees the changes as time passes: «I struggle in everyday life to see the changes in my body, the maintenance for which I need more vitamins, I have to walk more. .. I didn’t have to think about it for years. I see asymmetries that are created in the face, it’s not easy for a woman who does this job and has to constantly look at herself. On set I go less to see myself on the monitor. There is a disconnect between my perception of myself and who I really am.”

On the lack of motherhood: «It weighed on me while I was trying to become one. Now I see the children and I melt, but I don’t have that feeling of loss in my daily life. In fact, maybe I have a little relief. One adapts to what life offers you.”

We talk about quotas in everyday life and also in cinema, but despite her colleagues, Golino has always been critical, defining them as a defeat for women and a ghetto: «If we talk about wage equity it is still a long and sacrosanct battle . The pink quotas, even the sound of these two words embarrasses me. It’s not for me”.

The question about exes and how the relationships remained is inevitable, Varia is frank as always: «If you are referring to Riccardo Scamarcio or Fabrizio Bentivoglio, if you haven’t deliberately harmed each other you love each other very much. And that’s how it is with the two of them. I too, with others, have done harm. For six years I have been with Fabio Palombi, who does not make films and is younger than me. For others I don’t think it’s a problem. Not even for me, not yet.”
