Christian De Sica: the confession about his father Vittorio and the beginnings of his career
“When we met my father had recently died, I was without a penny in my pocket, only the previous debts.”De Sica confessed about the beginnings of his love story with Silvia Verdone, Carlo’s sister. Christian reveals that in his youth he and his wife Silvia lived in a situation of extreme economic precariousness, struggling to cope with hunger and financial difficulties.
His childhood, marked by skipping meals and hunger, was an experience far from the wealth and luxury one might expect from an acting family. “We skipped meals back then,” confesses De Sica, “and to think that I come from an old-fashioned family, where we all had to sit at the table and we ate from appetizers to ice cream. Always.”
Christian De Sica suffered from hunger: sacrifices before success
Despite coming from a wealthy family, De Sica found himself having to face hunger and financial difficulties together with his wife Silvia. Their shared life was marked by moments of extreme sacrifice, such as when Christian was shooting a film in France and, despite his professional success, the couple faced the daily struggle to have enough food. “I once shot a film in France,” recalls De Sica, “and we’re talking about the end of the Seventies, for breakfast they gave us two eggs with bacon, I took them and gave them to my wife. For me it was fasting.”
However, despite the difficulties, it was precisely the world of cinema that changed Christian De Sica’s life. His film debut with “Christmas Vacation” in 1984 was a turning pointopening the doors to a successful career that made him one of the most loved and appreciated actors in Italian cinema.
