The star of Inglourious Basterds Christoph Waltz publicly criticized the posthumous sanctification of a cinema legend like Marlon Brando. The Austrian actor considers it a rather annoying and exaggerated practice, amplified in 2024 by the centenary of the actor’s birth celebrated a few weeks ago.
Marlon Brando was the inspiration of actors like Harrison Ford but perhaps not of Christoph Waltz:“Now it’s Brando’s centenary. I read two articles and I found them really annoying, as well as this posthumous sanctification to make it a mythology. And it’s ridiculous because he was an exhibitionist” Waltz said during a conversation with his colleague Caleb Landry Jones.
According to Waltz, Marlon Brando was great in the beginning and no one had ever seen anything like it. However, according to the actor, theBrando’s performance in MissouriArthur Penn’s 1976 western, is difficult to watch, adding not to give a damn about the actor’s alleged behavior on set.
Caleb Landry Jones said:“I remember hearing you [Waltz] talk about Brando and think he was ‘frustrating and self-absorbed.’ After a year on stage [per Un tram che si chiama desiderio] you would think he would have become more aware. But then I think that created some frustrations that you see in Missouri. I know people always say it was difficult and all but I don’t know if the people he worked with were always ready. There’s that great YouTube video behind the scenes of The Score, with De Niro and Brando doing a few takes in a row and Brando is just looking for something authentic, something that wasn’t of him. Maybe it’s selfish for Brando to work this way”.
