The realignment of excise duties wanted by the government will lead to an increase of 4.05 cents. According to Codacons calculations, a full tank will cost up to 2.47 euros more (over 80 euros a year)

The new year will begin with an increase in the cost of fuel for around 17 million motorists in Italy. It is the result of the realignment of excise duties desired by the government, which will entail a tax increase of 4.05 euro cents per liter for diesel. For 2026, this move – according to Codacons – should bring around 552 million euros into state coffers. The consumer association states that, also considering the 22% VAT, a 50 liter tank of diesel will cost 2.47 euros more than the current price from January 1st.

Over 80 euros more per year

Assuming two full tanks per month, according to Codacons, the annual outlay will be 59.3 euros more per car. If we also consider the 1.5 cent increase started last May, iThe overall price increase is equal to 3.38 euros full, +81.1 euros per year. The government’s maneuver provides for a similar reduction for the excise duty on petrol, but the reduction risks remaining only on paper: as already observed in May, when the excise duty increased by 1.5 euro cents, the price of diesel at the pump immediately increased, while for green fuel, despite a reduction in the excise duty of 1.5 cents, the reductions were minimal.

Prices falling in November

Assoutenti asks the government to alert Mister Prezzi to ensure the correct application of the realignment of excise duties. The association, in fact, says it is ready to turn to the Financial Police and the Antitrust to sanction any speculation affecting consumers. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy underlines that the decline in average fuel prices at the pump continues which began last November 26, “a particularly significant drop because it coincides with the Christmas holiday period”: the price of petrol is “at the lowest level since October 2021”.

The bills

A 2.7% cut, however, for the electricity bill in the first quarter of 2026 but the annual expenditure will increase to 590.73 euros in the period between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026, +13% compared to the 522.97 euros recorded in the similar period 2024-2025. The contraction, explains Arera, is linked to equalization component within the scope of expenditure on energy and the downward revision of some items relating to transport and meter management costs.
