Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, surprising result at Pikes Peak

Hyundai Ioniq 5 No continues to amaze everyone, even on unpredictable occasions like Pikes Peak. The model, modified for the event on the American heights, has in fact collected record after record with the drivers Sordo, Pobst and Zaras, once again highlighting the capabilities of a car whose performance is there for all to see.

Hyundai surprise at Pikes Peak

The Korean company took part in the car hillclimb in Colorado last June 23rd, surprising everyone. In fact, with two modified models of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, the brand surprised with its performance, leaving us speechless with records and agility on the impervious track.

Hyundai Motor entered this year’s Pikes Peak with two Ioniq 5 N TA (Time Attack) Spec it’s a Ioniq 5 N as standard. The Ioniq 5 N TA, driven by the Hyundai World Rally driver Dani Sordo, he finished the race in 09:30.852, winning the Exhibition class. But not only that, because with its chronometric result the Korean model has established a new competition record.

The second TA Spec, led by Randy Pobst, he finished the race in 09:55.551. Aside from a small software tune to increase the engine’s maximum output and some changes to the performance components, including new shock absorbers, sport brakes and slick tires, the TA Spec still retained most of what the Ioniq 5 N series offers customers.

The standard Ioniq 5 N, however, was driven by Ron Zaras, on its debut on the Pikes Peak hill, finishing with a time of 10:49.267, demonstrating the top-end capabilities of the model without modifications. And in this case too it is a record, with the model that graduated as the fastest among the battery-powered ones present in the American competition.

“We are absolutely thrilled with setting a new record at Pikes Peak and with our overall performance”he has declared Till Wartenberg, vice president and head of N brand and Motorsport of Hyundai Motor Company. He then underlined: “Going forward, we plan to continue to leverage exciting motorsports events like Pikes Peak to showcase the superior performance of our mass-produced vehicles and continue to develop technology that not only meets customers’ needs, but exceeds their expectations. .”

What is Pikes Peak

Known as Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, it is a car and motorbike time trial on the route that winds along the slopes of Pikes Peak, the Colorado mountain range in the USA. The race is held annually and reached its 102nd edition in 2024, with a renewed version.

The track, 4,301 meters long, 16 kilometers from Colorado Springs, has its starting point at almost 3,000 meters above sea level, with a race route of almost 20 kilometers with 156 bends and hairpin bends and a height difference of 1,439 metres. Partly paved and partly dirt until 2012, the entire route was completely asphalted after a legal dispute.

Among the drivers who have passed through Pikes Peak is also Sebastian Loeb, who in 2013, aboard a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak, raced and won on his debut, setting a record that lasted until 2018.
