BYD and CATL, new batteries with 6C charging are arriving: what it means

Reduce charging times to make filling up with energy as similar as possible to classic refueling is a very important job to encourage the spread of electric cars. The companies that develop batteries they are working hard on this aspect in collaboration with car manufacturers. Very interesting information has arrived from China in recent days.

According to what CarNewsChina reports, before the end of the year will debut new Blade Battery 2.0 from BYD and Qilin Battery 2.0 from CATL that they will allow refills at 6C. This means that these batteries will be able to recharge at a power up to 6 times their capacity. In theory, with a 6C battery it would be possible to fill up in just 10 minutes.

Definitely interesting news that makes it clear how much work is being done on the development of batteries to make the charging experience better. Obviously we will have to wait for the presentation of these new accumulators to discover all their features.

It is worth mentioning that CATL launched 5C batteries in China a few months ago. We saw a first example recently. A Zeekr 001 equipped with CATL’s 95 kWh Shenxing batteries (LFP) achieved a peak charging power of almost 550 kW. In 11 minutes and 28 seconds it was possible to go from 10 to 80% charge.

Another example, the new Li Mega equipped with a Qilin 5C battery from CATL (102.7 kWh) has reached a peak charging power of 521.8 kW. To go from 10 to 80% it took just 10 minutes and 36 seconds. Instead, BYD currently seems behind CATL in terms of charging performance. However, it seems that he wants to close this gap soon.

To be able to exploit the performance of the new batteries, however, an adequate infrastructure. HPC columns capable of allowing charging with such high powers are rare and it is therefore essential to invest both in the development of stations with increasingly greater powers and in their installation in order to have an increasingly widespread high-power network.
