Mercedes slows down, electric cars flop. And the excise hypothesis arises

Despite the Taliban’s green campaign, the disaster of electric cars it is a consolidated reality. THE numbers they speak clearly about the market, both for Italy and for Europe. The vehicles on tap are not well digested, there is little that can be done: in our country, in the first three months of 2024 the market share of electric vehicles was ridiculous, just 2.8 percent. But that is not all. The failure of the hyper-green ideology is demonstrated by the changes in direction of producers, who preferred to cut planned billion-dollar investments due to the terrible market trends. The latest giant in the automotive world to brake sharply is Mercedes.

After Ford, which confirmed the revision of its plans for electric vehicles, Mercedes is working to rewrite its green strategies. The first step is represented by the interruption of the development of the MB.EA-Large platform. We are talking about the platform dedicated to the production of luxury car on tap, with a budget of 5 billion euros. A decision taken due to the terrible sales data: the stop is temporary and there may be news depending on the evolution of the market. The plans of the German giant were quite ambitious: the electrification of the entire next generation of flagships and premium SUVs, namely S-Class, GLS, E-Class and GLE.

Mercedes leaders seem to intend to use the already existing EVA2 platform, so as to cut excessive costs. “In the coming years there will be both: electric cars and ultra-modern, electrified combustion engines. If the demand is there (referring to thermals, ed.), well into 2030″, the words of Ola Källenius, Mercedes number one: We are aiming for zero emissions, but the transformation it may take longer than expected”.

And that’s not all, there’s something new that exclusively concerns Italy. On the government’s table there is the hypothesis of transferring the excise duties from fuel to electric cars: a project to avoid losing those funds that the State recovers from petrol and diesel today and which will disappear with progressive electrification “The Ministry of Economy and Finance has already started working on this point” confirmed the minister Giancarlo Giorgetti. The head of the Treasury emphasized the effects that electrification will have on the shift of fuel excise duties to new forms of power and it will not just be a reduction in revenue, but a significant transfer.

“This is an area on which the Mef has already started working also in consideration of the updating of the European legislation on the taxation of energy products”, continued Giorgetti, focusing on the need to keep in mind the evolution of the tax bases based on the transformation of the economic system. In short, everything is in motion but the signs are far from promising. With all due respect to the Taliban.
