Often the detractors of electric cars they complain “poor” autonomy of the same, and just as often car manufacturers offer us cars with an autonomy of 7/800 km: but do we really need them?
According to the study carried out byInternational Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) the answer is negative,”no”. Although automakers are making larger and more capacious batteries, this is a long-term effort in favor of a few.
According to a study by ICCT, on average in 2022 electric cars had a range of 419 kilometres, and only very few drivers would benefit from batteries and longer ranges. The 400 km therefore today represent a sort of “standard” and there are many green ones capable of covering such kilometers on a single charge, such as the Fiat 600e presented last July, as well as the Jeep Avenger and Alfa Romeo Junior twins.
To reach its conclusion the ICCT took into consideration three different types of drivers. The first is an urban commuter who makes five trips a week of 22 kilometers each. A rural commuter with five trips of 34 km, and finally a driver who uses the car often, for a total of 20 kilometers twice a week plus another 374 kilometers three times. Additionally, all three drivers undertake long-distance leisure trips of 750 kilometres.
The car used in the simulations was the Volkswagen ID.3, which we tested last summer, in an environment with the climatic conditions of Berlin and several charging points available to the driver. According to the researchers, a range of just over 400 km is available for urban and rural commuters enough to complete 98 percent of your trips without charging. It is also reported that larger batteries mean greater CO2 consumption due to higher emissions during the production phase and an increase in energy consumption.
