National tire register, the tool to manage end-of-life tires is born
Descriptive text here

The national register of producers and importers of tyres. The new tool was established by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security with the aim of facilitating and ensuring the management of end-of-life tires (ELTs). The minister Gilberto Pichetto explains that the Tire Register is a crucial tool to ensure adequate and sustainable management of tires that are no longer usable.

According to the decree, subjects required to register in the Register must do so electronically via the portal provided by the Chambers of Commerce.

How the registry works

On the dedicated portal, sector operators, public administrations and citizens have the opportunity to access a wide range of information relating to the management of end-of-life tires (ELTs). This information includes not only statistical data regarding the collection and treatment of ELTs, but also complete lists of registered companies involved in this process.

Through access to the “Reserved area“, companies are able to send the information necessary for registration in the register and to regularly communicate the data relating to the tires placed on the market and those collected at the end of their use.

Furthermore, in accordance with the provisions of the provision, those who operate in the remote sale of tires on the national territory are also required to fulfill management obligations and must guarantee the visibility of their Registry registration number on their website. This information must be promptly communicated to the online platforms used for distance selling, thus ensuring greater transparency and traceability in the tire management process.

Tire collection, data for 2023

A new economy can be born from the transformation of end-of-life tires into resources that can contribute to protecting the environment. Ecopneusa non-profit organisation, committed to the collection and recycling of tires that have reached the end of their useful life, in January communicated the 2023 data linked to the recovery and recycling of end-of-life tyres: throughout the national territory there were collected over 187 thousand tonnes of end-of-life tyresexceeding the set objectives by 12%.

These exceptional results have allowed Ecopneus to meet the extraordinary objectives established by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, successfully tackling the challenges of the national ELT collection system. Over 65,800 collection missions have been completed at more than 23 thousand tire dealers and other ELT generation points, demonstrating the operational effectiveness of Ecopneus on a national scale.

As many as 127 million euros saved with the recycling of end-of-life tyres

The recycling system managed by Ecopneus stands out as an example of sustainability and innovation in the sector. The rubber obtained from the recycling of ELTs represents a precious resource, widely used in various applications throughout the world, such as sports surfaces, safe and long-lasting asphalt, acoustic insulation and street furniture. The recycled rubber market is constantly growing, and Ecopneus is actively committed to identifying new lines and application sectors through continuous Research and Development work.

The recycling activity managed by Ecopneus generates significant economic benefits for Italy. In 2022 alone, responsible ELT management produced a savings of 127 million euros and contributed to reduce CO2 emissions by 300 thousand tons. Furthermore, 1.5 million cubic meters of water were saved and 336,000 tons of raw materials were avoided. The Ecopneus supply chain generated 59.8 million euros in 2022, of which 51.7 million were allocated to the services of companies in the supply chain, thus helping to stimulate the industry and create employment.
