A few hours ago we told you about the hypothesis that Tesla would cut 20% of its workforce globally. Now, according to an email circulated internally within the company, the official cut would be “more than 10%”.
The situation at Tesla is very delicate, the first quarter of 2024 was a disaster and the company has started a process to identify the weakest players globally to begin a series of layoffs. Over the years we have grown rapidly, with several factories opening around the world. Due to this rapid growth in some areas a sort of redundancy of roles has been created. As we prepare the company for a new phase of growth, it is essential that every aspect of the company aims to increase production and reduce costs.
Precisely to reduce costs we were forced to review the general organization of our factories and to make the difficult decision to cut more than 10% of jobs globally. There is nothing I hate more but I have to do it. This will allow us to be ready, innovative and hungry for our next phase of growth.
I want to personally thank everyone who is leaving Tesla for all their hard work over the years. I am extremely grateful for all the contributions they have made and wish them the best in their future opportunities. It’s really hard to say goodbye.

While we don’t know exactly how many layoffs there will be, “more than 10%” of the global force means at least 14,000 employees, given that Tesla currently employs around 140,000 people.
