Presentation of the book Believing in Dante: truth in fiction

In conversation with Prof. Federica Anichini, Lecturer at NYU Florence, Cornish re-examines the episodes in Dante’s masterpiece that leave the modern reader alienated, uncomfortable, considering them from the perspective of the entire poem, and thus returning to us readers a strong Comedy, convincing, still significant today. Alison Cornish is Professor of Italian Studies at New York University and President of the Dante Society of America. He has written: Reading Dante’s Stars (Yale, 2000), Vernacular Translation in Dante’s Italy: Illiterate Literature (Cambridge, 2011) a commentary on Paradiso, translated by Stanley Lombardo (Hackett, 2017), and Believing in Dante: Truth in Fiction (Cambridge , 2022), awarded the Bridge Book Award in 2023. He has also published several essays on Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio. During the seventh centennial of the poet’s death, she organized a series of video conversations among members of the Dante Society of America, entitled “Canto per Canto: Conversations with Dante in Our Time.” All events are free, but reservations are required as places are limited.
