An unmissable event for all photography enthusiasts. On Monday 10 June (from 6.30 pm) the Galleria Toledo will be presented at the Teatro Stabile d’Innovazione «Behind the Icons. Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima», the new book by Roberta Fuorvia published in the Galassia Gutenberg series of the Martin Eden publishing housewhich features a foreword and afterword by photographer Paul Lowe and artist and art curator Erik Kessels.

The author will dialogue with Irene Alison. «Behind The Icons» is a project born in 2018 as a cycle of short lessons on iconic photographs of the twentieth century, evolved into an editorial project. A photography essay on the most representative shot of the Second World War.

An instant four hundredths of a second long will forever change the life of a photographer, six men, their families and an entire country. Four hundredths of a second, enough to make “Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima” become the most famous war photograph ever, which inspired a novel, a film and the then President of the United States of America, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, to make that image an icon of military power made in the USA. The anecdotes, the rumours, the lies, the inaccuracies, but also the media impact and the technicalities linked to a certain type of image. Roberta Fuorvia reconstructs this story in detail, giving importance to the uniqueness and unrepeatability that every single photograph possesses and investigating the reason why certain images become iconic.

Roberta Fuorvia is a curator specializing in contemporary photography. The exhibitions he curated include: Il Real Albergo dei Poveri by G. De Luca (MANN – National Archaeological Museum of Naples, 2023), Apice by V. Laureano (Italian Cultural Institute, San Paolo, Brazil, 2019) , In your Place by L. Bastianini (Circulation(s) festival in Paris, 2017), The Phone Book by R. Herman (LO.FT. gallery, Lecce, 2015) and Il Giovane favoloso by M. Spada (stage photographs from the film of the same name by M. Martone, Recanati, 2015)

Since 2016 he has been a teacher of photographic editing at the CFI – Independent Photography Center of Naples. He is one of the co-founders of the association THE DOCKS, which promotes events and educational and editorial initiatives in the photographic field.

Since 2020 she has been curator of the international photography award Passepartout Photo Prize. Since 2023 she has been an iconographic researcher for the Natural History Museum of Oman, Muscat (Sultanate of Oman).
