In this second meeting the well-known pedagogist Alessia Dulbecco will present the new book “It’s always been done this way! Ideas for gender pedagogy”, published by Edizioni Tlon, at the UBIK bookshop in Cesena (Piazza del Popolo, 25). Marianna Tonellato, former Mayor of Castrocaro, lawyer and feminist activist, will discuss with the author.

Alessia Dulbecco (1985) pedagogist, trainer and counselor specialized in combating gender violence. After a decade of activity in various anti-violence centers, today she collaborates with schools, companies and associations. You write for various newspapers, including «The Italian Review», «L’Indiscreto», «Il Tascabile», «The Vision». “It’s always been done this way! Ideas for gender pedagogy” is her first essay. The book starts from the assumption that the gender binary, or the rigid separation of what is considered male and female, is internalized to such an extent that it is considered natural and biological, and strengthened by the tradition of the assumption “it has always been done this way” . The pink or blue bow, the dolls or toy cars, the injunction to docility or courage at all costs, that is, the stereotyping of education and play from a very early age, in fact limits people’s lives from childhood, limiting its characteristics and potential and creating disorders and inconveniences that can also have harmful effects in adult life. Gender pedagogy has been questioning these dynamics since the publication of “Dalla parte delle bambine”, the volume by Elena Gianini Belotti which symbolically marked the origins of the discipline in 1973. Alessia Dulbecco takes up the baton: through research, studies and concrete examples demonstrate how gender stereotypes still impact education today, limiting individuals’ self-esteem, aspirations and freedom of choice. The book is clearly addressed to operators in the sector, such as pedagogists, psychologists, teachers, educators, but not only: the education of the little ones concerns all caregivers, primarily parents and grandparents. It is also useful for them to identify the “gender cages” within which, out of habit, socio-cultural context and education, they tend to pigeonhole girls and boys into “behavioural models” which risk limiting their personal freedoms and choices of life. Nonetheless, these conditionings, according to Dulbecco, cause consequences in adult life both on a personal level and in the development of power dynamics between the sexes, encouraging the phenomenon of gender violence.
