The protagonist of Belly she is twenty-six years old and her name is Margherita, like the wild flowers, “those that tear themselves away or suffocate under careless steps”. He has been in a vegetative coma for more than a month following a suicide attempt (two bottles of Tavor stolen from the mother who suffers from depression, accompanied by milk). Only a machine keeps her alive, she is covered in tubes and tubes.
The other characters in the novel (the mother, Doctor Bottai, nurse Bianca) think that she does not understand anything. Margherita, on the other hand, sees everything.
