The protagonist of Belly she is twenty-six years old and her name is Margherita, like the wild flowers, “those that tear themselves away or suffocate under careless steps”. He has been in a vegetative coma for more than a month following a suicide attempt (two bottles of Tavor stolen from the mother who suffers from depression, accompanied by milk). Only a machine keeps her alive, she is covered in tubes and tubes.

The other characters in the novel (the mother, Doctor Bottai, nurse Bianca) think that she does not understand anything. Margherita, on the other hand, sees everything. He doesn’t smell or smell, but he sees, thinks, comments on the reality around him, the memories of his childhood, the conflicting relationship with his mother.

Their car journeys, in which Margherita dreamed of throwing herself out of the car, at one hundred kilometers an hour, just to get rid of her. The time her mother bit her wrist, she peeled off her skin. The times she corrected the words she wrote in her essays, she accused her of mistaking jealousy for nostalgia, just because they sounded similar. The time she threw a frozen chicken at her, in her face.
