On Saturday 20 April, at 6pm, the presentation of the book “The sixteen heroes of Premuda” (documents and testimonies on the daring Mas squadron during the Great War in the upper Adriatic) by Maria Giuseppina Rizzo di Grado will be held at Palazzo D’Amico and Premuda, published by Lombardo editions. The event is sponsored by the Municipality of Milazzo and organized by the Milazzo publishing house.
The mayor Pippo Midili, the councilor for Cultural Heritage and Public Education, Lydia Russo, the author Maria Giuseppina Rizzo, the publisher Antonio Lombardo and the historian Fabio Milazzo will participate in the presentation.
History has handed down to us above all the names of the Commanders – as highlighted in the publication – but in very few cases do we know the images or names of the members of the crews who participated in the other MAS enterprises, those “men of firm heart, in love with their duty, prepare for any adventure, proud to be able to impose one’s strength and superiority, not with the brute mass of overwhelming means, but with the agile instrument which, better than any other, interprets and symbolizes the spirit of initiative and audacity of the Italians ” as Luigi Rizzo described the men who served on the MAS
Premuda’s feat is an example of this. Although since 1939 the date of 10 June has been chosen to celebrate the “Navy Day” to remember one of the most significant and daring actions carried out at sea during the 1st World War, in addition to the Squadron Leader Luigi Rizzo, embarked on the MAS 15 commanded on very few occasions, the other sailors of the two crews were also remembered by the Chief Helmsman 2nd Class Armando Gori and the Commander of the MAS 21 Ensign Giuseppe Aonzo.
The only way to revive the memory of the 16 of Premuda – explains the publisher Antonio Lombardo – was to find their descendants and collect their testimonies about the lives of their loved ones. With the hope that the reader will be left with the memory not only of the acts of heroism that our sailors performed during the Great War, but above all the human side that each of them has shown in their lives.
