the South East Visual Arts Festival in Otranto

OTRANTO – The historic alleys and open spaces of Otranto are preparing to welcome the first edition of FASE, the South East Visual Arts Festival. From 21 June, the widespread event will transform the seafront and the city center into a gallery in the open air, with exhibitions, talks, workshops and music that will liven up the city until the end of summer. There are numerous photographic exhibitions and installations that will be set up in many of the symbolic places of the history of this town, on the occasion of the very first edition of the exhibition curated by the Fuori Phase APS association with the artistic direction of Alessia Locatelli, the support of the Municipality of Otranto and the patronage of the Puglia Region.

The common thread of the exhibition is the gaze of artists and protagonists from the world of culture on the contemporary world and the concept of sociality. FASE questions the important goal of photography achieved in these first 200 years of beauty, capable of transforming the perspective of the great authors into a language necessary to tell, through images and photography, the world around. So where will photography go in the next 200 years? «A lot of progress has been made since digital – declares the artistic director Alessia Locatelli – and syntographies today open up new exciting challenges to the world of authorial images. The choice of artists is not random, we went in search of something that made sense and allowed us to question ourselves not only about the future of photography – she concludes – but also about the existence and identity of the Otranto community. Questions that we will try to answer together during the artistic journey drawn up for FASE.”

“The Fuori Phase association was born because a group of people with different percentages of Otrantino in their blood, 12 years ago, inspired by a TED talk by the French street artist JR, decided to bring the Inside Out project to Otranto. – declare from the association – The idea (which we will talk about in a dedicated talk) was to involve the community in artistic expressions to send a message of hope. Since then we have always had the desire to organize something bigger, permanent for Otranto, because we believe that the city deserves and needs a strong recognition of itself through art and culture”.

The first appointment is with Fuori Mercato on June 20th inside the covered market, live photobooths will be created with giant-sized prints which will then be posted on the walls. From 21 June inside the Covered Market the exhibition dedicated to “12 months Without Summer” will begin and the opening press conference will take place at 7pm at the former Capuchin Convent where the following will be present: the mayor of Otranto Francesco Bruni, the councilor for Tourism Cristina De Benedetto, Giulio Romito and Andrea Sparro of the Fuori Phase association and the artistic director Alessia Locatelli.
