Milan, free art exhibitions and museums not to be missed in May 2024

As per tradition, on the first Sunday of the month (5 May) it will be possible to enter the main Milanese museums for free. But not only. Throughout May, various Milanese institutions and galleries will also host a series of unmissable exhibition projects: from the exhibition dedicated to Cézanne and Renoir at Palazzo Reale, to the exhibition on Picasso’s works at Mudec. Here are all the free exhibitions and museums to visit this month

May will be a very rich month for art and culture lovers in Milan. In addition to the traditional first Sunday of the month (in this case May 5th) which allows free entry to the most important art venues in the Lombardy capital, various Milanese institutions and galleries will host a series of unmissable exhibition projects. From the exhibition dedicated to Cézanne and Renoir at Palazzo Reale, to the exhibition focused on Picasso’s masterpieces at Mudec: here are all the exhibitions you absolutely must visit this month in Milan.

Exhibitions in Milan in May

Royal Palace

The jewel in the crown of the Milanese Royal Palace is the unmissable exhibition entitled Cézanne / Renoir Masterpieces from the Musée de l’Orangerie and the Musée d’Orsay. Through a series of 52 masterpieces from prestigious Parisian museums, the exhibition explores the life and work of Paul Cézanne and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, two of the greatest masters of Impressionism. The result is a fascinating itinerary to discover the most iconic masterpieces of the two artists, from portraits to landscapes to bathers and still lifes. Also not to be missed, also inside the Milanese building, is the exhibition project De Nittis. Painter of modern life which, hosting a selection of 90 paintings – including oils and pastels, celebrates the talent of the nineteenth-century master Giuseppe De Nittis.

Finally, the exhibition is also worth mentioning From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce&Gabbanaa project that traces the creative process of two of the most famous designers in the fashion world, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, through the different artistic expressionists that have always characterized them.

MUDEC

The MUDEC – Museum of Cultures will also remain open, from 9.30am to 7.30pm (the ticket office will close one hour earlier), on May 1st. While the museum’s permanent collection may be subject to closure due to a strike by the staff, the three temporary exhibitions will remain open as usual. It’s about Martin Parr. Short & Sweetthe exhibition dedicated to the irreverent British photojournalist and his collection of over 200 shots, and Picasso. The metamorphoses of the figurewhich traces the very rich production of the unforgettable Spanish painter, from his youthful works to his later masterpieces. The third exhibition route not to be missed at Mudec is Tattoo. Stories from the Mediterraneanthe exhibition that explores the history of tattooing and the evolution of its meanings over the millennia.

Prada Foundation

The absolute protagonist of the Milanese foundation is certainly the great retrospective dedicated to the artistic production of Pino Pascali. Set up on the two floors of the Podium, in the South and North galleries of the Milanese foundation, the exhibition itinerary, scheduled until 23 September, sheds light on the unmistakable style of the artist who, together with Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mario Merz and Alighiero Boetti, is one of the great exponents of poor art. At the center of the exhibition stands a series of 49 works by Pascali coming from international institutions and private collections.

ADI Design Museum

The famous Milanese museum dedicated to the history of Italian design will host a series of unmissable exhibition projects in May. In addition to the permanent collection which brings together a selection of unique masterpieces of design and architecture, the institution also hosts several temporary exhibitions. Among these, the unmissable stands out Origin of Simplicity. 20 Visions of Japanese Designa collection of over 150 masterpieces of Japanese design capable of providing a fascinating overview of the artistic language and Japanese craftsmanship.

Museum of Science and Technology

Triennale Milan

Brera ‘s picture gallery

Among the most important ancient and modern art galleries in Milan, the Pinacoteca di Brera will open its doors to the public free of charge on Sunday 5 May.
