European Photography 2024, exhibitions and news not to be missed

Reggio Emilia, 25 April 2024 – European Photography 2024 – from 26 April to 9 June (opening days on 26, 27 and 28 April) at Reggio Emilia – this year invites us to reflect on a particularly urgent topic: i relationships between man and nature, from different points of view and from different points of view. Palazzo Magnani, the Cloisters of San Pietro, Palazzo da Mosto, Villa Zironi, Palazzo dei Musei, the Panizzi library and the Spazio Gerra will host the exhibitions.

‘Nature loves to hide’ is the title chosen by the artistic direction of the festival composed, once again, of Tim Clark, Walter Guadagnini and Luce Lebart. The exhibition historic edition of this edition returns to theaters Palazzo Magnani with the retrospective, never presented in Italy, of Susan Meiselas, an American photographer famous for her work in the conflict areas of Central America (between 1978 and 1983) and in particular for her powerful shots of the Nicaraguan revolution.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Mediations ‘, collects a selection of works ranging from the Seventies to today. The rooms of the sixteenth-century Cloisters of San Pietro will host ten exhibitions. Including ‘Sky Album. 150 years of capturing clouds’ by Luce Lebart and Michelle Wilson, celebrating the vastness and beauty of cloud images and the unique practice of photographing the sky by scientists, amateurs and artists. While the Indian photographer Arko Datto brings to the attention of visitors the looming issue of the climate catastrophe and the refugees it generates in the Bengal Delta.

At the Palace from Mosto the clients of this edition find their place, together with an exhibition dedicated to photographic books and the two winning projects of the Open Call. The production of Fotografia Europea 2024, entrusted to Karim El Maktafi, is entitled ‘Day by day’, and focuses on the fascinating context of the ‘Internal Areas’.

Beyond The festival is enriched by a calendar of events that accompanies visitors from the opening days – 26, 27, 28 April.

In addition to meetings with the artists, the program also includes moments of discussion with Mariangela Gualtieri and Marco Paolini, both in dialogue with Loredana Lipperini. The third edition of Photophony, the musical declination of the festival curated by Max Casacci (producer and founder of Subsonica), this year’s title is ‘Urban souls’ and is dedicated to the history, present and future of an Italian music capable of fusing black and soul roots, with the complexity of contemporary urban languages, through melody and words.

Also for this edition the Circuit Off – the collective and independent event that enriches the festival with an innumerable series of exhibitions: over 260, spread throughout the city and in the province – presents projects by professional photographers alongside young people at their first experiences, enthusiasts and associations who deal with the theme of the fragile balance between man and nature by exhibiting their shots in shops, restaurants, studios, courtyards and private houses, historic sites, art galleries, schools. The whole plan (both the In Circuit and the Off Circuit) and all the information is on Fotografiaeuropea.it.
