A painter from Catanzaro who is also well known internationally, Giovanni Marziano, an appreciated artist and therefore invited to exhibit in various parts of the world: Valletta (Malta), the National Museum af fine arts with the homage to Mattia Preti, El Rincon Del Art (Granada), the Artelibre Gallery (Zaragoza), Mas De Les Gralles (Tarragona), the Sala El Potro (Cordoba), the Gallery France Di Beynac et Cazenac.
“When a Master leaves – so I wrote on the occasion of his passing – the pain becomes a sword that seems to treacherously pierce you, you are afraid that everything will be lost, that what you have done up to that moment has been useless now that he there is no more’ “.

In these simple thoughts there was all the sadness mixed with despondency that had been unleashed in all of us students at his school.
But as often happens in families, when you lose a loved one we hold each other tighter to ease the pain and we try in every way to make them stay in our lives.
Furthermore, we did not want traces to be lost either of the commitment carried out up to that moment, or of the knowledge acquired with the guidance of the Master.

Coming together in association was therefore the natural epilogue to an unfortunate and unexpected event.
“Giovanni and Alessandro Marziano’s school of realist painting” has given new life to the students and strength and comfort to the artist’s family as well as still representing today an art school in the capital, which welcomes members of all ages, whatever their motivation for artistic education.

Giovanni’s son, Alessandro, who lives in Rome where he has his studio, offers his father’s students his availability for online meetings that take place twice a week, during which each student’s paintings in progress are reviewed through advice, ideas and references to the history of art. In addition to giving emotional and technical continuity to the Association, Alessandro has proven to be a precious resource for each of us, although the void left by his father is unparalleled.
Peppino Sala, a well-known photographer from Catanzaro who has brilliantly done painting and is the current President of the young Association, in wishing the school’s students a good 2024, writes in a post: “…every time I enter those rooms I feel him close to me with his decisive teachings and punctual which, at times, transcended painting and art in the strict sense to cross over into general topics that belong to our lives… I hope that the school continues to be animated by the enthusiasm and climate of friendship that distinguishes us and that we inherited from our Master.”

Giovanni Marziano should also be remembered as an artist who passionately dedicated his life to realist pictorial art, convinced that for him this technique represented the only way to tell the truth.

He declared himself a great scholar of Caravaggio, the great painter of the seventeenth century almost contemporary with our equally great Mattia Preti, who loved the truth, so much so that often his models, taken from the street, were real people who became saints in the paintings, Apostles and Madonnas.

Giovanni was also inspired by Vespignani whose conception of painting he shared: “painting as an aesthetic fact and painting as an ethical fact”.
Furthermore, he often stated that “Painting is the place where you think with yourself” and in fact those who deal with art know that emotional processes, memories, dreams are translated into images and that painting is not just about acquiring theoretical skills. -practices but embark on an adventurous journey in which you continue to learn about yourself.

The exhibition features paintings created by the school’s students using a variety of materials and techniques that will amaze visitors. Some of them are produced by expert painters who are already established but who, despite the fact that Maestro Giovanni himself had told them that they had reached such a level as to be able to work independently, continue to frequent the workshop which is also considered an opportunity to breathe art, beauty, culture and friendship.
A self-portrait of Maestro Giovanni Marziano is permanently exhibited at the Civic Museum of Taverna, home of the immense Mattia Preti.
