Tragedy in Valle Maggia, drinking water by helicopter for isolated villages

Destroyed roads, towns that are difficult to reach and services that are not always guaranteed. The tragedy of the Valle Maggia, in the Canton of Ticino, with destroyed bridges and victims, is currently being managed by the cantonal authorities.

The cantonal police communicate that during the night the activities of the Regional command staff (Smrc) continued with the primary objective, after the first emergency phase dedicated in particular to searches, evacuations and imminent danger situations, of reaching the most remote locations in order to provide support to the population.

In this context 3 patrols of the Cantonal Police were transported to Fusio, Peccia and San Carlo to set up hotspots, which guarantee communications with the Smrc, and made direct contact with the residents they managed to find. Today’s priorities are those related to research as well as the restoration of traffic, starting with the problem related to the Visletto bridge and in the sections of the Upper Valley less damaged by bad weather, water supply of drinking water, electricity and communications in the less affected areas.

As regards the supply of drinking water, helicopter flights are planned in the areas where it is lacking.. Currently in Cevio, Bignasco and Cavergno there is electricity and the supply of non-drinkable water is guaranteed. In Mogno and Fusio the supply of non-drinkable water is guaranteed but there is no electricity. In Menzonio, Brontallo, Prato Sornico, Peccia, Piano di Peccia and Veglia the water supply is not guaranteed and there is no electricity. To facilitate rescue operations, the invitation to the population to reduce travel to a minimum and not to go to places affected by bad weather is renewed.
