EU, Orban launches slogan for Hungarian presidency: ‘Make Europe Great Again’

To inaugurate his rotating presidency of the EU, Viktor Orban recycled Trump’s (or perhaps it is better to say Ronald Regan’s) slogan “Make Europe Great Again”. The six-month presidency for Hungary, which will officially start on July 1st and end on December 31st, arrives at a very delicate moment for the European institutions, involved in the process of appointing community leaders and then the members of the future Commission. The presidency program was presented in Budapest and, in the next few days, will be taken up again in Brussels. The logo refers to Rubik’s cube, the famous architect born in the Hungarian capital in 1944.

“A moment of extraordinary challenges”

Orban’s schedule promises to be packed: “Hungary assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union at a time of extraordinary circumstances and challenges. Our continent is facing common challenges due to the war in our neighbourhood, the EU is increasingly lagging behind its global competitors”, reads the foreword of the programme. Hungary also highlighted some of the EU’s fragilities, such as “illegal migration, the vulnerability of international supply, natural disasters, the effects of climate change and the impact of climate change and the impact of demographic trends” . The priorities of the Orban government also include the strengthening of European defense and “an agricultural policy oriented towards farmers”.
