Not even 24 hours after the opening of the elections for the European Parliament, which took place today 6 June with the Dutch already ready to go to the polls, cyber threats begin and the climate of tension intensifies. The Russian hacker group known as Noname057(16) announced targeted attacks on the internet infrastructures of European countries, casting a shadow on the electoral process. Between the lines of their Telegram channel, Noname launched a frontal attack on the European Parliament, accusing it of being a “pseudo-democratic and profoundly Russophobic body”, which has “deliberately ignored the genocide of the population of Donbass for eight years”. To then target the anti-Russian sanctions, which they say are senseless. Finally, the proclamation of the threat: «We are coming! Glory to Russia!
The attack in Holland
But the Nonames are not alone in this mission. A coalition of hackers, including People’s CyberArmy, HackNeT and Cyberdragon, have joined their crusade, intensifying cyberattacks across Europe. The first blows were struck in the Netherlands, where the Ministry of Justice and Amsterdam’s public transport company, GVB, were targeted, causing outrage and concern among Dutch politicians. Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV), the Christian Democrats (CDA) and Thierry Baudet’s populist Forum for Democracy (FvD) have suffered a series of DDoS hacker attacks on their websites. Responsibility for these attacks was later claimed on Telegram by HackNet, a group with alleged pro-Russian sympathies, raising questions about possible external interference in the democratic process. In fact, it cannot be ruled out that further attacks could occur in various EU countries in recent days.
