Putin in China to discuss Ukraine and Olympic truce

While the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region seems to have suffered a setback, there is talk again of a possible peace conference. And a warning comes from the Pentagon against the use of American weapons against Russian territory.

On the second day of his visit to China, President Putin spoke to journalists from the city of Harbin about his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Among the issues aimed at consolidating the strategic and military alliance, the war in Ukraine took center stage. Putin revealed to the international press that he too had discussed a possible Olympic truce as requested by the French government. “China – said President Xi Jinping – supports the convening of an international peace conference recognized by Russia and Ukraine at an appropriate time with equal participation and fair discussion of all options”.

A slowdown in the Russian offensive

On the military front, the day was marked by declarations from the Ukrainian General Staff which claims to have stopped Moscow’s advance on the north-eastern front and which claims the successes of the bombings conducted during the night on Crimea and on some western regions of Russia. Meanwhile, controversy is mounting over the risks associated with the possible use of US weapons outside Ukrainian borders. A hypothesis that the Pentagon has indicated as inappropriate, while in recent days Secretary of State Blinken seemed to have left a free hand on the use of military aid for Kyiv.

In this context, the hypothesis put forward by the leaders of the Atlantic Alliance to send qualified military personnel to Ukraine to educate and train the new recruits of the Kyiv army is once again gaining ground. A proposal that finds allies deeply divided over the consequences that direct intervention could produce. Finally, just today, President Zelenski gave the green light to a law that also allows the enlistment of prisoners for minor crimes.
