There is someone who thinks like Macron. The mental predisposition to prepare to fight Russia is strongly felt in those countries geographically close to Ukraine. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, in an interview with the Guardian, speaks precisely of the prospect of an ad hoc coalition of Western countries to send military training personnel to Ukraine with air defense support. Speaking to the Guardian after meeting his British counterpart, David Cameron, in London, Gabrielius Landsbergis also backed the British Foreign Secretary for saying that Ukraine could use British weapons against Russia; remarks which, combined with Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to rule out the presence of Western troops in Ukraine, prompted the Kremlin to threaten UK assets and order a tactical nuclear exercise.
Lithuania’s foreign minister for four years, Landsbergis has long called for tougher action against Russia, and goes along with Macron’s claims that the West should not rule out sending troops to Ukraine. He said the proposal to train Ukrainians inside their country is “more practical” than training which takes place on the territory of NATO members. And he said that the Lithuanian parliament has already given the government the mandate to train within Ukraine, but that it would be better to do so as part of a broader coalition.
«The Ukrainians, especially Dmytro Kuleba, the Foreign Minister, are making it painfully clear which Patriot batteries are needed and how they would be used. And then he talked about an interesting aspect: hybrid warfare already exists in our countries too: “Physical attacks, arson, violence against individuals,” the minister listed, explaining that these assaults do not fall under the traditional definition of an attack to be addressed through Article 5 of NATO.
