The state of Oklahoma was crossed on Sunday by a line of marked instability which triggered not only very violent thunderstorms, but also a series of devastating tornadoes. The hardest hit was the rural town of Holdenvilleabout 100 kilometers southeast of Oklahoma City, where four people lost their lives, including a newborn. One hundred people were injured, 20 thousand people were left without electricity and several buildings were seriously damaged or even razed to the ground.

Just south of Holdenville is also the town of Sulpherwhich has around 5,000 inhabitants, suffered extensive damage due to a tornado, with dozens of people injured after taking refuge inside a bar during the tornado’s transit. Cars and buses were lifted and thrown meters away by the gusts of wind, some buildings in the center of the town were destroyed and several houses were uncovered.

In addition to the damage caused by the tornadoes, strong thunderstorms also struck large quantities of water, causing the water levels of a lake within the Chickasaw National Recreation Area to rise, where a pedestrian bridge was swept away by the storm. Today the storm line has now left Oklahoma and is of interest East Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois, as it moves eastward with the possibility of new tornadoes during the day.
