Weapons, money and oil flow in and out of the Russia on board ships that sail the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, somehow bypassing Western sanctions. Self Putin has been managing to sustain such an expensive war for two years now, without destabilizing the country’s economy too much, it also owes this to its “ghost fleet”.
Russian ship docked in China: is the Angara carrying North Korean weapons for Moscow? «It’s impossible that Beijing doesn’t know»
The «Sirian Express» route
Starting from those boats that, with the beginning of the war in Ukrainethey began to shuttle between the Syrian port of Tartus and the Russian one of Novorossik, on the Black Sea, transporting weapons later used by the Kremlin in the conflict with Kiev: artillery of various types and armored vehicles that Moscow had previously used to support the Assad regime in the civil war in Syria. A route renamed «Sirian Express».
The case of Sparta IV
The British think tank is talking about these maneuvers Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). The report – writes the Corriere della Sera – also deals with the particular case of the Sparta IV ship, a civil cargo but in fact attributable to the Ministry of Defense of Moscow, which inaugurated a new route. Having left Tartus with its transmitters turned off, the vessel passed the Bosphorus Strait to cross the Black Sea, only to then make a U-turn and proceed towards the Mediterranean.
The Sparta IV then passed the Sicilian Channel, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and sailed around the Atlantic to arrive at the Russian port of Kaliningrad. Off the coast of Portugal the cargo was escorted by the Russian frigate Grigorovich: a fact that suggests that the cargo on board was considered “sensitive” and of a certain importance for the Kremlin. Furthermore, from Kaliningrad, the cargo could have been transferred to Russia: but since it was an exlcave it would mean that the material passed through European territory before reaching Moscow.
Oil trading that circumvents sanctions
Putin is fueling the Russian economy (and the war) also through the sale of petrolium, in defiance of Western sanctions. According to the report, the Kremlin is using “ghost” boats, ships that operate under another flag and clandestinely trade Russian crude oil. As? The transhipment of the oil would take place on the high seas on the purchasing tankers, where the payment then also takes place. The black gold would thus end up in China or India, and then return to Europe, dodging sanctions.
The Ghost Fleet
The “ghost fleet” would be made up of ships operating without insurance and outside maritime regulations. To hide the vessels from the eyes of enemy radars, Moscow manipulates the signals automatic identification system (AIS) transmitted by ships to alter their position or identity. It would also be able to block signals GPS to mask the movements of the vessels themselves.
