French President Emmanuel Macron has clear ideas and demonstrated it today with his speech at the Sorbonne University in Paris, through which he called for the affirmation of a ”powerful Europe” to respond to the great challenges of the twenty-first century . Europe must regain control of its strategic choices: this is the point on which the head of the Elysée focused most. “A powerful Europe knows how to protect its borders and for this reason we must emerge from a sort of strategic minority and have a credible defense of our continent. We were implicitly conceived by agreeing to delegate our security to others who did not want to see us rearmed too quickly We have delegated our energy to Russia, security to the United States and other aspects to China: we must take control of these aspects back into our own hands,” he said.

There was no shortage of words of concern. “Europe is in a situation of encirclement”, said the French president, referring to the conflicts that are jeopardizing international balances and underlining the current “generalized rearmament of the world”. Faced with this context, he stated, “today we are still too slow and not ambitious enough.” France and the French army are ready to put themselves at the forefront of European defense thanks also to nuclear weapons, “an essential element of European defense to build the security guarantees” of the continent, declared Macron. “France has nuclear weapons and therefore the possibility of deterrence”, he continued, “nuclear weapons are an essential element of European defense to build the security guarantees that our partners in Europe expect”.
