The famous sparkling water brand Perrier, a subsidiary of Nestlé, has destroyed two million bottles of water “as a precaution” after the discovery of bacteria of “fecal origin” in one of its wells in the department of Gard, in southern France, whose exploitation he had to stop. Nestlé Waters made this known to AFP.

He was the prefect of the department to order the company, with a decree dated April 19, to “immediately suspend” the operation of one of the water basins of the Perrier production site, located more precisely in Vergèze, near Nîmes.

The decree indicates that the basin “presented an episode of contamination for several days starting from 10 March 2024 by germs that demonstrate contamination of faecal origin”, such as Escherichia coli.

It is also underlined that “a contamination of the water collected from this source cannot be ruled out and could pose a health risk to consumers”.

Nestlé reported that the well is subject to “enhanced surveillance (…) at the request of the authorities” and its exploitation “will resume at the appropriate time under the control of the authorities”. However, the company guaranteed that “all bottles on the market are safe to consume.”
