Arrest warrant for world chess champion Kasparov and other well-known Russian figures: they are said to be foreign agents

The city court of Syktyvkar arrested in absentia the world chess champion Garry Kasparov, the former deputy of the State Duma Gennady Gudkov, the environmental activist Evgenia Chirikova and the politician Ivan Tyutrin, recognized as foreign agents. All are located outside the Russian Federation. The news is reported by Kommersant.

According to the court’s press service, depending on each person’s role, they are accused of creating an association for terrorist purposes, financing terrorist activities and publicly justifying terrorism (articles 205.4, 205.2, 205.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) .

A criminal case was initiated based on the materials of the FSB department for Komi. The detention period is calculated from the time of detention of the accused in the case. If they are detained on the territory of a foreign state, from the moment of transfer to Russian law enforcement agencies.

Garry Kasparov has lived in Lithuania since 2016. Together with Ivan Tyutrin, former executive director of the Solidarity movement, he founded the Free Russia Forum (recognized as an unwanted organization) in March 2016. Evgenia Chirikova and Gennady Gudkov (recognized as foreign agents) are members of the Free Russia Forum.

The Free Russia Forum is based in Lithuania and presents itself as an independent platform for the Russian political opposition. The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that the activities of this organization pose a threat to the constitutional order and security of Russia. In November 2023, the forum organized an auction to raise funds for Russian and Belarusian citizens fighting against the Russian army on Ukraine’s side.
