Great Britain, excluding an agreement on youth mobility with the EU

No to a European-wide agreement on youth mobility between Great Britain and the EU. The British government has excluded the proposal of the European Commission which just this week had invited the 27 countries of the Union to start negotiations on a “youth mobility programme” at European level for British citizens aged between 18 and 30. The United Kingdom, however, as stated by a government spokesperson, already has individual youth mobility programs with 13 countries and prefers to continue to stipulate bilateral agreements with individual countries. After Brexit, Britain left the European student exchange program and a Europe-wide mobility deal would make it easier for young Britons to live, study and work in the European Union.

No to agreement with EU

“We will not introduce a European-wide youth mobility scheme: free movement within the EU has been stopped and there are no plans to introduce it,” a government spokesperson said. The UK, he added, was open to agreeing youth mobility programs with its “international partners”, including individual EU member states. The opposition Labor Party has also ruled out the possibility of a Europe-wide programme, saying it will seek to improve the UK’s working relationship with the EU within its red lines: “no return to the single market, to the customs or free movement”.
