Of Samuele Finetti

The president, at 45 percent, is only one point behind the tycoon and is recovering consensus among the democratic base and among minorities. But the majority of voters reject him on both the economic and foreign policy fronts

Joe Biden has closed the margin and is once again tied with Donald Trump in the polls ahead of the presidential elections on November 5th. In the latest survey, carried out by New York Times and from Siena College, the tycoon still ahead by one point — 46 percent versus Biden’s 45 percentplus 8 percent undecided — but the two candidates are practically tied.

Good news for the president, given that the previous survey (published by Wall Street Journal on April 3) gave The Donald the lead in 6 of the 7 key states. And in February he was ahead by five points, at 48 percent.

Biden owes this recovery to a return of popularity among Democratic voters: 89 percent of Americans who voted for him in 2020 also support him in this election campaign (for Trump, the number rises to 94 percent). According to Times — the survey was carried out on 1,059 voters between April 7 and 11 — Biden’s advisors are banking on the fear of Democratic voters, who are starting to regroup to avoid a second Trump term. The president is recovering votes also among African Americans and Hispanicsalthough still far from the traditional support given by the two communities to Democratic candidates.

However, there remains more than one unfavorable factor for Biden, starting from his age: for 69 percent of Americans, at 81 years old too old to be president. Then there are the economy – which Biden mismanaged for 63 percent of voters – and foreign policy, on which approval stops at 36 percent. Overall, 64 percent of Americans believe the country is going in the wrong direction.

Also Trump has his weaknesses: Majority of voters convinced he committed federal crimes. But his age (he will turn 78 in June) is considered a limitation by only 41 percent of voters, while 64 percent approve of his economic policies and a large portion of the country supports his positions on international affairs.
