The story of Bette Davis, the dog who wandered around with a sweatshirt around her neck and a secret behind her

The sun was setting in San Bernardino, California. It was almost sunset when Jaina and Ivy Spagis were going in a minibus to get coffee. Suddenly, in front of the vehicle, a large dog appears and suddenly crosses their path. After the sudden stop and the couple, both convinced animal rights activists specialized in rescuing stray cats, look into the dog’s eyes and notice that a piece of fabric is hanging from his neck.

“We found this poor girl with a sweatshirt tied around her neck,” the couple, founders of the Cats of San Bernardino association, wrote on Instagram. The dog, who they later named Bette Davis, was looking frantically around the parking lot as if she were looking for the his family. Spagis and his wife tried to get close to her, but at first she kept their distance. A few moments later everything had already changed: the dog immediately turned to have her belly rubbed.

Having gained her trust, the two took her to a safe area, away from traffic. There they gave her a dog drink and, while she was busy enjoying it, the two of them freed her from the sweatshirt that she had around her neck. Once these operations were completed, the dog got into their vehicle and all three went to a vet. There they discovered that the animal had a microchip which revealed the heartbreaking truth about her past.

“We managed to contact the owner and found out that he had moved away and couldn’t take her away,” Cats of San Bernardino wrote on Instagram. “We asked if he wanted her back, and he said, ‘No.'” Given such a clear answer and, above all, the blue eyes full of love and gratitude, the couple promised the dog that they would take care of her.

But as dedicated cat rescuers, the Spagis’ home is equipped to house many felines at a time. And they never planned to save the dogs, so they weren’t quite ready to welcome Bette when they found her. Luckily, a kind foster family took her in for a week while the couple created a dog-friendly space in their home.

Now Bette Davis has been reunited with her rescuers and is still looking for a forever adoption, but luckily the requests are pouring in. In the meantime, Spagis and his wife will continue to shower her with the love she deserves and remind her how lucky they feel to have found her that day.
