In the violent conflict that shows no signs of abating between Ukraine and Russia, a new technological frontier is emerging, destined to change the face of war: artificial intelligence applied to drones. According to what was revealed by The Telegraph, Ukraine is developing drones “unstoppable” which work precisely thanks to AI and which will be much more difficult for Russian forces to shoot down. This news, supported by Western funding exceeding 200 million pounds (coming mainly from the United Kingdom), could mark a turning point in the conflict.

The project

Kateryna Chernohorenko, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister, outlined the contours of this ambitious project, underlining how the goal is to make unidirectional attack drones less vulnerable to Russian electronic attacks and allow operations at greater distances from the front line. The heart of this revolution lies in the targeting system based on image recognition, capable of autonomously identifying and hitting targets. The challenge, therefore, is to overcome Moscow’s increasingly sophisticated defenses, thus allowing drones to hit the target without direct human intervention. This technology requires the drone to be controlled by an operator up to a distance from the target that leaves it decidedly safe: from that moment on, artificial intelligence takes the reins, significantly increasing the chances of success of the attack and making the drone “unstoppable”.

Future developments

Kiev’s strategy is not limited to simple technological implementation, but already looks to the future, with the allocation of a significant part of the funds for the development of a new generation of combat drones. However, British defense sources have specified that there will be no direct involvement of the British government in the production process of AI-guided drones, despite financial support. Ukraine’s drone program is not without controversy, especially following U.S. condemnations of Kiev’s attacks on Russian oil refineries. At present, Ukraine can already count on an arsenal of drones capable of hitting targets at distances exceeding 600 miles, demonstrating an important technological advancement already underway.

Russia does not stand idly by

While Ukraine accelerates the development of its AI drones, Russia is also not standing by and integrating artificial intelligence into its devices. This sets the stage for a technological arms race in which AI plays an increasingly decisive role, highlighting the growing importance of this technology not only in the Ukrainian theater of war, but also in the broader arena of global competition for technological supremacy .
