Rome, 1 April 2024 – Fears are growing about a hypothetical new Russian assault on the Ukrainian capital Kiev, which is raising a large ‘wall’ to protect the city. Imposing defense lines have been built around the urban agglomeration, which extend for a total of one thousand kilometres. “We have installed defensive lines: dragon’s teeth, anti-tank ditches and other non-explosive barriers. Almost 10,000 concrete pyramids and an anti-tank ditch has been built,” said the head of the military administration of the Kiev region, Ruslan Kravchenko, on his Facebook account. It is a question, he explained, of building defensive lines and establishing an effective barrier system “in so that the inhabitants of the Kiev region feel as safe as possible.”

In the meantime, the mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitchkohe said he was certain, speaking to the German newspaper Bild, that Kiev continues to be a goal of Russian President Vladimir Putin, although he assured that the city “is much better prepared than two years ago”, when Kremlin troops tried in vain to take the Ukrainian capital. “If Putin made this decision (to advance towards Kiev again), it would be a bloody decision,” he warned. Naturally, he insisted on the need for more air defense systems. Kiev is the best protected city from anti-aircraft missiles and Patriot systemsunlike other Ukrainian cities.

Last March 28, the Nova agency, quoting the ‘Politico’ newspaper, reported that “Ukraine is engaged in a race against time to erect new defensive lines on its territory, after the failure of the offensive that was supposed to isolate Crimea occupied by Russian forces last summer, and the latter’s counteroffensive that drove Ukrainian forces out of the city of Avdiivka”. Again quoting ‘Politico’, he reported that “several analysts fear that the Ukrainian authorities have waited too long before starting to erect the powerful defenses necessary in the event of a large-scale Russian offensivewhich Kiev fears could materialize soon in the north-east and south-east of the country”.

A few days ago, on March 27, the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had inspected the new defense lines of his army in the North East of the country, which is currently trying to consolidate its fortifications against Russian forces. “The construction of the fortifications continues in Sumy region. I inspected trenches, shelters, firing, command and observation positions“, Zelensky wrote on Telegram, assuring that Ukraine is “strengthening its defenses.”

In the region of Dnipropetrovskin the central-east of Ukraine, Kiev’s forces have already built 42 kilometers of anti-tank ditches as part of a system of fortifications against the advance of Russian forces, the governor of the oblast, Serhyi Lysak, reported on his Telegram channel, quoted by Ukrinform. “We are strengthening defense in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. We work in several directions at once, and a lot of equipment and specialists are involved,” Lusak writes.
