The fires continue in the Palermo area, where canadairs and helicopters have been in action since this morning in the woods near Altofonte. The Valle Fico area has been burning for two days. Instead, the fires in Borgetto, on Mount Gradara, where the fire raged for 48 hours, devouring hectares of Mediterranean scrub, were tamed. Yesterday the state road 186 which connects Partinico and Borgetto with Monreale was again viable. Some fronts are still open in the province of Messina mainly due to the mistral wind, along the Ionian coast, where we are also intervening with air vehicles. In the municipalities of Santa Teresa, Letojanni and Savoca, where outbreaks persist, the firefighters maintain great attention. How Firms works, the NASA fire map
Active fire data is collected in near real-time. The Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) distributes active fire data obtained in real time (NRT) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua and Terra satellites and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard of S-NPP and NOAA 20 (formally known as JPSS-1). Globally this data is available within 3 hours of satellite observation, but for the United States and Canada active fire detections are available in real time.
