In A Quiet Place: Day 1now in theaters, catches the attention Frodo, gatto which follows protagonist Samira (Lupita Nyong’o) during the alien attack on New York. In an interview with Variety, director Michael Sarnoski revealed that two felines, Schnitzel and Nico, were used on set to “play” him: “We managed to complete the entire film without creating a CGI cat, and that was a huge victory for us.”.

In the film, you have to not utter a sound to save yourself and this also applies to animals. During his research, Sarnoski learned that meowing is part of the natural behavior of cats, but “a lot of this is done as a way of communicating with humans. So, I thought, in the apocalypse, if there were no people around, a cat wouldn’t need to meow“. Furthermore, since Frodo is trained as a service animal, “I thought he was very obedient. If Sam said, ‘Be quiet,’ he obeys. … Cats can be extremely quiet. They are predators, they can stop and move very quietly and I thought he understood what was happening. So when a cat sees these creatures in action, he thinks, ‘I won’t be heard.‘”. Schnitzel and Nico also behaved well on the set, adds the director: “They got along well and were together all day“.

The main challenge was in fact another: meeting Nyong’o, who has always been afraid of cats. To prepare for the close relationship between Samira and Frodo, the actress therefore underwent long exposure therapy. Tells:

Paramount was kind enough to hire a cat trainer who met with me before I came on board and helped me overcome my fear, just through exposure and questions, [come] “Why is that cat rubbing on that furniture like that?” Very slowly, I was able to gather the courage to touch them and, before long, hold them in my arms.

By the end of production, Nyong’o had fallen so in love with her co-stars that she got a cat of her own, Yoyo. Here they are in a post on Instagram shared by the actress:
