Free electricity and gas market from 1st July: nothing changes for “vulnerable” customers

From July 1st, the enhanced protection market for the supply of electricity and gas will end: around 4 million users must decide whether to choose a new operator immediately or whether to temporarily switch to the gradual protection service. The objective is the complete liberalization of the electricity market and significant savings on bills. For the gas sector, the protection service has no longer been available since January, while for the electricity sector the expiration is expected in a few days.

Those classified as “vulnerable customers” (over 75, disabled or family members of patients connected to equipment, recipients of social bonuses or those who live in small non-interconnected islands) do not have to do anything to remain in the protected market. Other users, however, will be automatically moved to the gradual protection service, receiving electricity from the operator that won their area in a public auction, with a rate set by Arera and the operator itself.

But what is someone who wants to change to do manager? After choosing, among the various offers available, the one best suited to your needs – Arera warns – “it is sufficient to stipulate the new supply contract to replace the previous one. The new seller will activate the procedure for changing the seller (switching) and terminating the old contract (withdrawal)”.

A free change. Changing sellers has no costs for the customer, except for any costs associated with signing the new contract: stamp duty, if due according to tax legislation, and security deposit or other guarantee, if provided for in the contract.

In particular, stamp duty is due in the case of a contract not drawn up in the form of commercial correspondence, or a contract drawn up in the form of commercial correspondence which requires registration at the Registry Office (usually only in “cases of use”, for example when the contract must be deposited at the judicial chancelleries following administrative activities or at public offices).
