BMW M5 for the first time embraces electrification: the seventh generation of the Munich sports sedan debuts with a plug-in hybrid system which combines the classic twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor. The result? A total power of 727 HP and a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. All this, reducing consumption and lowering emissions.

The new version sports a bold design, with widened wheel arches, sculpted side skirts and a front end that doesn’t go unnoticed. With front air vents and a tapered profile, it doesn’t want to hide its sportiness. Even the logo “M5” engraved on the C pillar makes it clear that this sedan is no joke.

The interior follows the same philosophy, with M-specific finishes that enhance the sportsmanship of the passenger compartment. But there is no shortage of touches of luxury and technology, such as the new infotainment system BMW iDrive 8.5 with double curved screen.

Balancing power and sustainability

The Hybrid Powertrain combines a 585 HP 4.4 twin-turbo V8 with a 197 HP electric motor integrated into the gearbox 8-speed M Steptronic. The combined power thus reaches 727 HP, with a maximum torque of 1,000 Nm. And there is all-wheel drive M xDrive which releases all this power to the ground.

But the M5 also knows how to be “green”, at least on paper. BMW declares an average consumption of 1.6-1.7 l/100 km and aelectric autonomy until 69km thanks to the 18.6 kWh battery. With a flat battery, consumption rises to 10.2-10.3 l/100 km.

In all-electric mode, the sedan reaches 140 km/h. But with the M Driver’s Package, the full speed arrives at 305 km/h. To handle the 727 hp and 2,435 kg of the new M5, BMW has developed a chassis highly technological. Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, active all-wheel steering that turns the rear wheels by up to 1.5 degrees, larger anti-roll bars and reinforced engine mounts are just some of the refinements. On request there are also M carbon ceramic brakes, which save 20 kg compared to the already powerful standard M Compound brakes. The 20″ front and 21″ rear alloy wheels are shod with specially developed high-performance tyres.

Obviously there is no shortage of all the most modern ones driver assistance systems, standard or optional. From collision warning with automatic braking to lane keeping, from adaptive cruise control with stop&go function to automated parking.
