Orsi: discussion today between minister Pichetto Fratin and president Fugatti. The management of bears in Trentino is back on ministerial tables. This afternoon in Rome there was a new confrontation between the minister Pichetto Fratin and the president of the autonomous province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti. The latter brought to the attention of the head of the Ministry of the Environment the recent cases of sightings in Val di Sole, including that of the bear taken right in the center of Malé and raised the issue of the use of anti-bear spray, today granted only to foresters.

“With Minister Pichetto Fratin – commented Fugatti at the end of the meeting – we talked about the possibility of expanding the use of anti-bear spray not only, as it is now, to the forestry corps, but also to all Civil Protection bodies and the police forces. We would objectively like to do more, opening this possibility to all citizens, but we know that Italian law considers the spray to be a weapon. It will therefore be necessary to tackle this process step by step.”

Topics, in other words, that involve multiple institutional levels. “Now – confirms Fugatti – we will also have to discuss it with the Ministry of the Interior, as we have already done in recent months. In short, we are not leaving now, but we can say that we have noticed the right sensitivity on the part of the minister.”

President Fugatti pointed out that “there is certainly a greater number of bears than expected; a number considered excessive which creates great concern “The latest cases of Caldes and Malè, with the presence of the bear in the middle of the town have, understandably and rightly, further increased the level of fear on the part of the population who is now exasperated. Therefore the institutions, first and foremost the Province, must try to implement the actions that need to be taken to provide safety to citizens: it is a difficult path, because outside Trentino the thing is not understood. However, progress has been made in recent months, with the government in office, and we believe that it is a path with which we will be able to address this problem”.
