The work of the Municipality of Monfalcone continues for the realization the Plan for the elimination of architectural barriers (PEBA), with the aim of making the city increasingly accessible. In fact, the first phase of the study for its elaboration has been completed, which represents a fundamental tool for detecting and classifying all the critical issues and barriers present in the city, for identifying design solutions to eliminate them and for estimating the costs of the interventions, identifying the priorities. of implementation and proposing the interventions necessary to make the places of interest usable based on the principles of Universal Planning.

«We want to make the lives of those with walking difficulties better by identifying the best possible way to make the city “architectural barrier free” – highlights the mayor of Monfalcone, Anna Maria Cisint – developing a monitoring, planning and coordination plan necessary to highlight the critical issues to be resolved and, at the same time, very useful to offer more awareness to the people involved in the decisions, so that even private individuals are encouraged to take certain elements into account when carrying out works, because there is a big difference between eliminating barriers and designing “without” barriers.”

A process that has begun, which sees the participation of the Municipality’s technicians, designers, citizens and stakeholders, with the aim of identifying the best solutions and raising awareness on the topic of barrier-free design. It is therefore a participatory journey whose second meeting with citizens will take place on Monday 1st July, at 5pm, meeting in front of the building located in viale San Marco, 9 (on the corner with via Sant’Ambrogio) and will be dedicated to presenting the general objectives of the plan and collecting useful information and suggestions from the community. They will be present Stefano Vita, councilor for health policies, the district delegate councilor Irene Cristin and the district coordinator, Emanuela Guerrera.

«Since 2017 – continues the mayor – we have decided to apply the guidelines for the removal of architectural barriers to all extraordinary maintenance and renovation projects of public buildings and pavements, investing around 15 million euros just for the maintenance of roads and pavements. The presence of architectural barriers or critical issues in urban spaces and public buildings represents a limitation to mobility not only for people with disabilities or walking problems, but also for those who find themselves facing a particular condition in some phases of life, such as example parents with strollers, elderly people and people with temporary disabilities”.

«This is why it is essential that the Plan for the Elimination of Architectural Barriers is a tool for the implementation of which citizens are an active part, reporting and giving suggestions so that the work proposed by the technicians can become as effective as possible to improve urban accessibility, guaranteeing equal conditions of usability of the city and public buildings for everyone. The Municipality will also undertake to participate in tenders to extend the Peba and find the resources to carry out the works” concluded the mayor.
