his grandfather was mayor in the days of the flood

Florence has its first mayor, Sara Funaro. Born in 1976, grandson of Piero Bargellini, the “mayor of the flood”: he was at the helm of Palazzo Vecchio when the waters of the Arno invaded the city on 4 November 1966. Sara Funaro boasts long experience in the Municipality, having been part of Dario Nardella’s councils in both mandates of the outgoing mayor. In the last one you held the role of councilor for education, welfare and immigration. In the first mandate Nardella had responsibilities for welfare and healthcare, housing, equal opportunities, reception and integration.
Graduated in psychology in Florence, she specialized in psychotherapy with a four-year course in clinical psychology. Funaro completed a specialization course in phenomenological psychotherapy at the University of Urbino and attended a master’s degree in ethnopsychiatry with teachers from the Center Devereux in Paris. Over the years you have worked as a clinical psychotherapist, as a staff trainer and as a supervisor of organizations that worked with people coming from traumatic situations, especially migratory situations.
For Funaro, one of the priorities has always been attention to social issues: she started volunteering as a teenager with disabled girls and boys, and continued working as an operator with minors, in mental health and in addictions. In her career she also had an experience in Brazil, in Salvador Bahia, where the new mayor worked with street children and in psychiatric communities.
Indicated as a candidate by the Democratic Party, without going through the primaries, in this year’s municipal elections she was supported not only by the Dems, but also by Avs, Action, Più Europa, Centro, Anima Firenze and by the “Sara Funaro mayor” list.
