Marialuisa Forte (csx) wins with 51%

Yesterday, Sunday 23 June 2024, and today, Monday 24, the citizens of Campobasso they went to vote to choose the next mayor of the Molise capital. After the vote for the first round two weeks ago, the challenge for the run-off was between Aldo De Benedittis (centre-right) and the broad candidate Marialuisa Forte. The polls closed at 3pm today, Monday 24 June 2024, and the final data are now available. There new mayor she is the centre-left candidate Marialuisa Forte, who obtained 51% of the preferences, overtaking the center-right candidate Aldo De Benedittis, who stopped at 49%. Thus the result of the first round is overturned, when De Benedittis had come close to victory – which had also initially been announced, until the recount of the ballots requested by the other candidates – with 48% of the votes, while Forti had been voted for by 32% of voters.

Marialuisa Forte (wide shot) overturns the result of the first round and becomes the new mayor of Campobasso. In fact, he obtained 51% of the votes while his rival Aldo De Benedittis (centre-right) stopped at 49%. In fact, De Benedittis comes close to the same percentage of votes as in the first round (he stopped at 48%) but collapses in terms of total votes, going from 13 thousand preferences to just over 10 thousand. On the other hand, Marialuisa Forte went from 32% in the first round to 51%, gaining almost 2 thousand votes.

At the end of the first round, at first, the direct victory of Aldo De Benedittis seemed certain. The latter, after 55 out of 56 sections had been counted, seemed to have collected 52.2% of the preferences, according to official data released by the portal Eligible. But the opposition forces had reported errors in the transmission of data, especially due to the failure to attribute separate votes.

According to unofficial data released by other political forces, De Benedittis was below the 50% threshold. On the morning of Tuesday 11 June, the representatives of the various lists linked to the candidates Marialuisa Forte and Pino Ruta went to the Municipality and the Prefecture to ask for clarifications and verify the correctness of the data communicated. Only three days after the polls closed, the Central Electoral Office meeting in Palazzo San Giorgio communicated the correct data and sanctioned the ballot.

The definitive turnout figure is 49%, down 16 points compared to that of the first round, when 65% of voters went to vote – in those same days they were also voting for the European elections.

After the first round on 8 and 9 June, they competed in the run-off Aldo De Benedittis supported by the center-right and the candidate of the broad camp Marialuisa Forte.

For the last five years the municipality of Campobasso has been governed by the Five Star Movement. Roberto Gravina he had won the elections in 2019 and held the position of mayor of the Molise capital until 2023, the date on which – after running to govern the Molise region – he joined the regional council. Due to the incompatibility of the two positions, he had to leave his role as mayor Paola Felice (M5S), first female mayor of Campobasso.
